World's
Weirdest Seafood
As all fishermen know, some pretty strange things can come from out of the water. It's no surprise, then, that some of the world's oddest edibles have their origins in the sea. If it has some meat on it, tastes even halfway decent and doesn't kill you right away, you can bet someone somewhere will eat it. From the mildly interesting to the downright gross, here's some of the world's wierdest seafood. Urchins
They're spiny little balls with long black spikes that look like some kind of medieval torture device. Actually these little critters are chock full of roe (eggs, think caviar) that happen to be a delicacy all over the world. People say the roe is not fishy and has a very unusual taste. Sea Slugs
These ugly critters may look unpalatable, but they are eaten all over Asia, mainly in Korea. They are gutted, sliced and served with sauce and people claim they are surprisingly crunchy. Odd fact: sea slugs have been found to be the only animal in nature that produces chlorophyll and can carry out photosynthesis. Now that's weird! Sea Cucumber
Sorry to disappoint the vegetarians, it may look tasty and tempting, but despite its name, this little guy is an animal--meat. Considered a delicacy in China and revered for its aphrodisiac qualities, the sea cucumber is usually sold cleaned and dehydrated for use in soups or stir-fries. Seafood-Flavored Ice Creams
And for dessert...Seriously? Seafood flavored ice cream? Yes, really. One of Japan's lesser known inventions, this creative cuisine might not catch on in the states. Still if you want to try it, the flavor varities are staggering: Seaweed, Oyster, Whale, Eel, Shrimp, Crab, Squid, Octopus and of course good old Fish, just to name a few.
