Oprah's
Aussie Adventure Promotes Outdoors
Even though mobile technology is becoming more and more popular, people still spend most of their time stuck indoors. Between the time we spend at work in front of a computer and at home in front of the TV, the outdoors often gets, well, left out. So it's refreshing to see an influential media figure like Oprah Winfrey as she discovers her inner adventurer with a trip to Australia with 300 of her audience members. Unlike, say, a politician with a possible electoral agenda, Oprah has nothing really to gain from this jaunt Down Under. In fact, in her classic style, she's spending a ton of her own money taking the whole group on the voyage. And in the process, she's helping Australia breathe some life into what they say is a struggling tourism industry. It's also worthy to take note that the media queen could easily have used a much more culturally popular way to end her 25th and final season, like maybe with a cavalcade of stars, but, thankfully, she chose to embark on an adventure.
What trip to Australia would be complete without a hug by a Koala? Oprah couldn't wait for that, so she made Hamilton Island her first stop where she met some of the famous bears. Then it was on to the country's largest city, where she and her some of her tripmates climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, reportedly the biggest group to do so. After that, continuing the outdoor theme, Oprah took her clan to Bondi Beach, a legendary place to the locals (and home to one of the world's most unique swimming pools). And her outdoor excursions don't stop there. She has plans to take her fortunate contingent of diehard fans to experience some of Australia's most popular tourist destinations like The Great Barrier Reef, Kangaroo Island, Uluru and the Yarra Valley. While she at it, Oprah helped to further promote nature and wildlife with a visit with Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late outdoors expert Steve Irwin. The young "wildlife warrior" wore a huge snake on her shoulders during the interview taped for Oprah's show, which will air in January, 2011. Oprah will do three shows from Australia, one of which will be exclusively outdoors, highlighting the country's many amazing natural and cultural wonders. We're sure that the Aussies thank her, and outdoor enthusiasts everywhere should, too, as there's no better salesperson that Oprah right now.
