Neat and Tough Waterproof Stuff
by captkujo.com
December 22, 2010

Outdoor enthusiasts love waterproof. It's one of the most important attributes a piece of equipment can have, especially with today's electronic devices. Waterproof bags and packs, cases, housings, liners--they're essential because when something is safe from getting wet, it's also protected from dirt, grit, mud, sand and a whole host of other contaminants. Knowing this, manufacturers have over the years introduced myriad waterproof products, so it has become quite commonplace. But every so often something eyecatching comes along that demands to be mentioned. Here is some of that neat and tough waterproof stuff.

The Underabove

Waterproof cameras are nothing new, but this overgrown fish bobber takes them to a different level. Most people have seen those shots where the camera is halfway submerged, and many of us have tried it ourselves. What you get is half the image above water, the other below and not much detail of either. The Underabove has the capability of taking a full frame of both, and when combined the results could turn out stunning. The uses for such a camera are endless, especially if video capabilities are applied. Imagine a whole row of these things in an Olympic swimming pool. Neat.

H2O Audio Amphibx

There are lots of waterproof iPod armband-case products, but many agree that the best is the Amphibx by H2O Audio. If you want to listen to music while surfing, swimming, waterskiing, sail-boarding, jet skiing or any other water sport, this could be your answer. It's light and easy to wear, looks stylish and even floats if it happens to come off. Best of all, it allows for easy operation of your iPod.

Toughnote DA05+I

TerraLogic specializes in "rugged computing solutions for a broad range of individuals and organizations working in harsh or extreme environments." What that means is they take normal electronics and 'ruggedize' them for professionals who work in extreme conditions such as telecom engineers, geo-surveyors, military vehicle commanders, civil aviators and adventurers on expeditions to some of the highest places on the planet. With Windows Mobile 6 OS, 1 GB of on-board Flash storage and a wide array of features, the Toughnote is a device that can be used as a rugged, waterproof GPS unit, data logger, communications device, or for any other mobile application.

Save-A-Phone

This product isn't actually waterproof but it can almost be the next best thing. Imagine you drop your cell phone into the lake--glug--it's ruined. Well, maybe not! Just place the soggy cellphone into the Save-A-Phone pouch and 24 to 72 hours later, Voilà! Your phone is dry and functioning again! This definitely should be used only as an insurance policy and not relied upon as your sole waterproof solution.
