Learn
& Grow The Divers' Language With iPhone App
One of the first things new scuba divers learn besides BREATHE! is a new language. No, it's not French, the native tongue of Jacques Cousteau, but a series of hand signals that greatly assist divers communicate with other divers underwater. Usually we are taught the basics like "down"' or "up," "I'm ok," "I'm out of air," and "shark!" but its left up to us to learn much further. OK2Dive is an iPhone application that can help divers take their hand signal expertise, and their dive experience, to a new level.
We all know that better communication increases the quality of pretty much anything, and scuba is no different. And underwater its especially important, barring the use of radios, to be able to "talk" with hand signals. OK2Dive offers more than 160 international scuba hand signs in three modules: general, marine life and humorous. The general module covers the basics and the very important ones, like the signals for emergencies, problems, danger and questions. The marine life module can be particularly interesting, especially if you are diving with friends or children who love animals. You can share your excitement for sharks or rays, turtles, reptiles, mammals and fish of all kinds. The funny hand signal module is for kicks, for example the one for "I have to vomit." One of the truly valuable aspects of this app is the divers to see a visual representation of the signal and a picture of the marine life with the signal so dive buddies can know exactly what each other are talking about. Another great part about the app is the developers have started a weblog that allows users to add suggestions for new or not included signals. This will help to grow and develop the dive language while hopefully establishing some standards. Check out OK2Dive for the iPhone if you want to increase your underwater vocabularity.
