Midnight Run for the Midnight Rocket, a Tuna Virgin no more!

July, 29, 2010

A Tuna Virgin no more....The Midnight Rocket collected it's 1st ever TUNA BLOOD! With a new boat under me and an "iffy" weather outlook...Tuesday looked to be the day if you beat the afternoon wind.

So Monday afternoon I assembled three "salty dogs". "Ranger 61", "Tuna Cowboy", lurker and myself met up at Garibaldi. At 10 PM we had loaded ice and were just completing re-fueling operations and at the boat ramp.

By 11:30 PM we were crossing the bar in pitch black evening. Bumpy she was, but three sets of NVGs(Night Vision Goggles) working it was a piece of cake.. As forecasted, there was no wind but a legitimate 8-9ft swell.

Making no more than 15mph were we headed west to the 125.41 area where reliable intell put the water temp at 59.5 degree and fish being commercially taken.

By 4:30AM we were at the 125.04 line, with NVGs were able to see lights from two different boats not visible to the naked eye. we headed that way and yes they were commercial Tuna boats....so instead of continuing west we started dropping lines. Before the 2nd line went in....FISH ON!!!!

with in a couple minutes we were pulling the 1st Tuna aborad the Midnight Rocket. We had a minimal bite all morning and by 9AM we had 13 fish in the boat. We turned east and troll for awhile before picking up lines and heading back. We arrived back in Garibaldi by 11:30AM.

Water temp 59.5 water color the TUNA BLUE you want 2 125.04 to 125.10 45.39 to 45.45 the 1st trip I have captained where everyone got sick....yes including the Captain! One at a time we each gave up a load of bile to the ocean but all felt much better after our private discuss with the big blue..
